How To Find The Main Water Shut Off Valve

Published by 911 Restoration Iredell County on September 22, 2022 in category: Water Damage Restoration

There are many situations where it is necessary to turn off the water main in a home. You could have a burst pipe causing flooding or a persistent leak that cannot be fixed immediately. To fix any problem, it is a good idea to call an experienced plumber. However, if you need to shut the valve off immediately, you will need the main shutoff valve. We’ll give you some information to help you locate and shut off the valve to prevent water damage to your home.

Three possible locations could be where your water main might be. We’ll explain each location in detail and the reasons it was chosen so that you can locate your water main correctly the first time. From all of us at 911 Restoration of Iredell County, hope that this will help you find your main water shut off valve.

Location 1 – Inside of the House

The valve should be placed in an area that is not exposed to extreme temperatures. This is often done inside the house, especially in colder climates. The valve is usually not covered so search your basement or laundry room. You can find main water valves with either round or lever handles. To turn off the water supply, locate the valve and turn it clockwise to the right.

Location 2 – Attached To Exterior Wall

If you live in a warm area, the water main will be next to one your exterior walls. Locate your water main by looking around the exterior of your home. The main shutoff valve is usually located before or after the water meter. To turn off water, repeat the above procedure.

Location 3 – Front Yard

If your city or town has water supply, the water company will usually place water mains in your yard right at the intersection of the main street. A small metal/plastic plaque will mark the exact location of the valve. The plate can be found in your yard. After you locate the plate, you’ll need to lift the lid to get to it. Next, turn the valve clockwise to turn it off. This box usually houses your water meter.

These are the three places where the main water valve can be found. You can search for the valve in each of these locations. After you have turned off the main water supply, you can call an experienced plumber to address any plumbing issues you may be facing. The plumber will repair the damaged pipes and restore water supply. This procedure has another benefit: you will know exactly where your water main is so that you can turn it off whenever you need.
